Brain Club

Thursday, August 27, 2026 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Topic for this month: New Discoveries on Memory

What is the difference between language and communication? How did language emerge in human evolution? How is it acquired by our brain? Why can’t other species have languages or learn human languages? How can one acquire a language at all let alone a second language? How come it is so difficult for an adult to learn a second language? Why is it that we can never seem to be able to get rid of the foreign accents if we start to learn a foreign language as adults?
Brain Club focuses on these issues and others. This club is for people who are interested in learning basic neuroscience of brain anatomy and physiology on sensory and motor systems in terms of perception, action, emotion, cognition, memory, language and consciousness as well as mental health and certain disorders.

Hosted by Isaac Hou.

About Isaac:

I have an MBA and MIM and taught both English and Chinese languages. For the past 10
years, I have been engaged in international business consulting services. In 2017, I began studying comparative neuroanatomy across many species with special focus on human brains and principles of neural science with my professor at UC Berkeley. The finding is that all species share similar organizational structures and molecular mechanisms of action. What then made our brains invent symbolic languages grounded on iconism and indices?
