Children's Program
How it works
Join our summer reading program and choose how much YOU want to read this summer. Challenge yourself or choose a comfortable goal; flexibility is key! Track your progress however you like, then bring your calendar to the library for prizes once you've reached your goal(s). Keep the reading momentum going into July by continuing with your current goal or setting a new one. Remember, reading is all about fun! Even if you don't reach your goal, it's okay - the journey matters. Librarians champion all forms of reading, including audio books and graphic novels. At the program's end, every participant, completed calendar or not, earns an entry into our grand prize drawing.
A message for grown-ups
Our summer reading program is intended to instill a love of reading in our kids and to understand that reading can be fun. Encourage your child to set their own goals, praise their progress, and talk about what books they like and don't like. We understand that some goals may not be accomplished during the program's time frame. If your child doesn't reach their goal, that's okay! Goal-setting and goal achievement is a learning process. Our intention is to keep them reading and have fun doing it. When the program ends, all children who turn in their calendars, completed or not, will receive an entry into the grand prize drawing.

Free for All: The Public Library
Join us on Tuesday, June 3rd at 1pm to kick off the summer reading season with the newly released documentary, Free for All: The Public Library.
This exciting new documentary premiered on PBS Indie Lens in April. The film chronicles the evolution of the nation’s public libraries, tracing the battles over who can enter, what belongs there, and who makes these decisions, while exploring how public spaces are defined and defended.
Directors Dawn Logsdon and Lucie Faulknor traveled the US, discovering unsung historic and modern-day figures, often women, who contributed to the library’s integral position within democracy. The film charts the institution’s trajectory from America’s original Free Library Movement that began in the mid-19th century to current struggles in a digital age amidst budget cuts, closures, and polarizing book bans. Following the stories of public library visitors and staff striving to implement innovative policies, the documentary celebrates a civic institution whose offerings are free and whose doors are open to all. A couple Wisconsin libraries are highlighted in the film.
The film explores the following themes:
1. American democracy, civic ideals, and the public square;
2. Literacy and citizenship;
3. Women’s contributions to the public library movement;
4. Segregation, immigration, and racial justice; and
5. Libraries and contemporary public spaces.
The film lasts an hour and there will be time for a talkback with the Library Director, Linda Eastwood, and others following the film for those who want to stay and engage.
Refreshments and a drawing for a prize basket will also be a part of the event.

The Incredible World of Trees
The natural world is full of magic, and that is never so clear as when one learns about the lives of trees. How do trees grow? How do they survive the winter? What makes them change colors in the fall? Do trees in a forest communicate with one another?
Caitlin Reinartz, Forester and Tree Enthusiast, will answer these questions and more as we learn about the incredible world of trees. We’ll learn about trees in our yards, trees in our forests, how to be a better friend to our trees, and how our trees are being friends to us. This lecture is perfect for anyone who wants to walk through the woods saying “WOW!”
